Description
Firstly... to really appreciate the item you need to ENLARGE the images...left mouse click ...some taken on the scanner look a differant colour and ones taken with a camera. Of these some are taken with & without flash.
This is a fabulous hand written COPY of accounts of a SAILING SHIP called the LOYNE ...please be assured this is not a copy done last week.. it is a contempory copy of accounts done in July 1781.
I got this and a number of other fabulous sailing ship documents , books and paperwork from a large counrty house estate live auction...most of the ships are known as Colliers ..meaning CARGO SHIPS ...some of the documents relate ships from both the North East coast as well as the West coast ..and relate to various merchants in Jamaica and Liverpool - Sunderland - England ..with lists of merchandise on the ships going out to Jamaica to their holdings there....fantastic historical interest in them from all sorts of study groups.
This is a fold out piece of paper which has been folded and creased it has 2 watermarks which are abit difficult to see ..a large one with a LION and Britannia at the right hand side within a FENCE word PRO PATRIA at the top left hand side ...and BAND & SON below it the other is a small trade mark of some kind.....doing a google search for watermarks ...
Its hand written in dip ink quill pen ..and the neatness is good so you can read it easy enough.
Top line... ( 2nd copy )..these were copied for the accounts of the time ..remember there was NO bleedin copy machines , faxes or cameras in these days .. this was a business for someone copying all sorts of deeds, letters, accounts etc etc.
Ship Loyne .. Cost and Voyage from Jamaica Richard Waithman Master ( ships captain )
Then on the left hand page ..it gives a list of all the expenses of the voyage ...these prices will probably be in Guineas and not Pounds ( although it gives pounds sometimes ) abit confusing ....including to French & Hobson for cost of £3000 Insurance at 15 Guineas policy 6/..this cost 472 .16 .- cash paid , penant , Plantation certificate Report cost 5 shillings 9 . - then a list of men on board the ship and their wages ..these are interesting and vary quite abit from 35 . 1 .6 . to as little as 3 .6 . 3. - Alex Alexander for use of his boat cost 40shillings - other jobs include payment for Lightenage - sundry men for Work & Victuals - DUTY on the ship LOYNE valued at £800 ( plus other shortened wording which I cannot read ) this cost 40 guineas and another 2 guineas and 2 shillings for additional Duty - Hospital Lights £5 19 .2. - PILOTAGE FROM PIER & WORK 84/ - then afew more names of workers and days work etc - then JAMES HARGREAVES & CO for their half concern and A RAWLINSON & SONS LINDOW for their half concern ..these cost the same at 1550 .12. 6 . ..so a hefty amount there - Cordage bill 7.10.5. - an ANCHOR 6.1.10 - Drying Coffee 2.1.9. ..it then says RICHARD WAITHMAN ( remember he is the Master of the ship ) for sundries supplied the seamen which is deducted from their wages & Rum Money 58.7.4. - disbursements at Jamaica & allowed for cabin stores 11.15.8 - disbursements at Sunderland 11.4.11 - various work and wages paid below that - carting sundries & bill 6.6.0. - postage of letter 0.17.8. - commission on £2173.11.7 was 43.9.5 ...this side all totals ...4368.6.72 .
On the other side it then has lists of SALES ..I wont go into what they cost per casks , ton , etc etc or pounds .shilling .pence on these but will mention some of the commodities ..also it has some capital letters eg..SL..which may be differant MERCHANTS signs or names ..not sure

Then more bags of cotton ..then interestingly CAPTAIN RICH WAITHMAN for freight of Cotton Sugar & Indigo cost him 2.8.10

Then it says ERRORS EXCEPTED 21 June 1782 signed by A RAWLINSON SONS & LINDOW with a total of 4368.6.72
Turning the bit of paper over ..it is just as interesting..it says on the top line Sales SL... 100 casks sugar LOYNE a Jamaica shipped by James Hargreaves & co ..half their account and half our account .
left hand side has the dates 1781 July going down to 1782 April...so it starts off again with insurance on £4000 at 15 guineas policy - Duty and Entries on the casks of coffee and sugar - freight of the mentioned - cost of £1400 insurance of coffee to Dublin - brokerage and catalogue adverts and expence at public sale - porterage expences - packers visiting and accomodating 119 bags and cost of twine - cooperage work and nails & hoops - carting - warehousing - posting of letters - commission on money - sundry accounts ..this bit then says LANCASTER 8 APRIL 1782 ..Errors Accepted signed by A Rawlinson sons & Lindow ..total here is £7817.18.17
At the other side it just has a list of merchants and products with totals which total the same as just written above. £7817.18.17.
We are not finished yet.... this bottom bit in my opinion is very interesting..
Sale of Ship LOYNE Richard Waithman Master with the half joint owners in intial form only..J.H.& Co. - A.R. S & L half .
James Ryan for advertising the ship for sale 1.13.0. - something else about 28 days attendance on ship and another person for 40 days on the ship which totalled 6.16.0. - commission on the money 56.16.7 - sundry accounts for proceeds which was halved between the two compaines owning the ship equal 1392.7.27...giving a grand total of £2850 .....on the other side it says By Gilbert & Co for the Ship and all her tackle apparel and furniture as bill of sale of this date ...errors accepted 21 June 1782 signed by A Rawlinson sons & Lindow ..sum of £2850 .
The bit of paper is just over 8inch long x 3inch wide when folded up... and 16.5inch x 13inch when your reading it.
THATS IT ...I am finished doing the description now of the bit of paper.. interesting how it can hold so much info....and to anyone really interested in trade between Jamaica and England during this time it will no doubt be brilliant.. Doing a quick google search I see alot of similar bits of documents are held in Archives in Lancashire Record Office ...this of course is a historical document and wants looking after no matter what.
Conversion ... approx... 2.5cm = 25mm = 1 inch
