Mr William Shakespeares Comedies, Histories and Tragedies, Published According to the True Originall Copies - Second Folio of 1632 in Contemporary Binding Shakespeare, William
Book Description: Thomas Cotes for Robert Allot, London, 1632. Contemporary Full Brown Calf. Book Condition: Good. No Jacket. Second Edition. Folio - 12.5 Inches. The second folio of the greatest work in the English language. The most-sought after edition of Shakespeare aside from the First Folio which tends to sell in the millions for a decent copy. Bound in contemporary full dark brown calf with blindruled margins. Covers somewhat scratched and with a few blemishes but overall very presentable. Professionally rebacked by Temple Bookbinders of Oxford in contemporary style in matching calf. Simple raised bands to spine. Some minor refurbishment of edges of boards and corners. A trifle close-trimmed in places, sometimes resulting in loss of a few letters. Several leaves restored to the margins and edges where a little worn and chipped, occasionally with some loss of text particularly in the case of leaf H3. Some toning and rust spots in places. Some marginal soiling. Of the full work, 49 leaves are here provided in professional facsimile (by Aquarius) as follows - 8 leaves of prelims, pages 1-4, 19-38, 41-44, 255-262, 23-24, 329-360, and 409-419 where the original leaf is completely missing. In addition facsimiles of four leaves which have significant loss to the leaf, have been bound in to provide completeness of text. Also the first two leaves - the 'To the Reader' leaf and the title are provided in very high quality old facsimile. (20), 303, (1), 46, 49-100, (2), 69-232, 168, 269-419, (1) pages. Few early ink notes to bottom of last leaf of the Merry Wives of Windsor. Overall a well-read example of this rare work, with some defects, and a portion of text in facsimile, but priced accordingly. A rare opportunity to get this most influential of books in one of its earliest editions.
