Firstly... to really appreciate the item you need to ENLARGE the images...left mouse click ...some taken on the scanner look a differant colour and ones taken with a camera. Of these some are taken with & without flash.
This is a unique piece of Scottish History and seldom seen out of a museum ...it really could do with fully translating as I'm sure it would be rather interesting to the right people.
It is a vellum deed with a massive wax seal at the bottom.. I will talk about this first.. it is interesting in the fact that you can read it quite easily.. starts with S * IACOBI * SANDELANDIS * with a COAT of ARMS in the centre. ...which simply translates to THE SEAL OF JAMES SANDELANDIS....with his coat of arms.
The vellum - parchment deed is quite small and has lasted very well.. on the back it has a hand written date 1573 ..shows brown grubby marks too on the outsides ..years of light , grime and dust etc. its got a lovely feel to it.
Open it up and you can see the original cream colour..of the back it has had some very FAINT writing on the inside.. you cannot see what it says now.
Right open you can see the brown hand written document in Latin ..and signed in two lines at the bottom right hand side.
The chap I bought it from told me the following about it and what it supposedly translates to inside...
DEED of Surrender by James Sindelande of lands held by him as tenant in chief of his ' superior lord ' Multray , 1573 , relating to lands at Seafield & Tyrie , near Banff Aberdeenshire , manuscript latin in brown ink on parchment , hybrid Secretary and Court hand , ( strikingly similar to that of JOHN MUDY , Lambeth Palace MS117 ), well preserved seal S.Jacobi Sandelandis ... with coat of arms ( Sindelande states that the lands yield an annual income of twenty marks ' of the customary money of the Kingdom of Scotland ' and refers to the enfeoffment of his beloved son , John Sindelande )
It is 7.5inch x 6inch .. the seal is 33mm dia ..but the lump of sealing wax is 43mm dia x 20mm deep.
Conversion ... approx... 2.5cm = 25mm = 1 inch
