     Up here for auction is a vintage Parker "51" oversize Mark I series fountain pen, which was manufactured in USA circa 1950s. The pen is large and bold of overall length 5-1/2 inches. The Parker "51" went into production in 1941, and remained a best-seller for decades thereafter. Perhaps no other fountain pen has been so unanimously acclaimed as a classic. Nor is it merely a triumph of styling - though it has a place in the Museum of Modern Art's design collection, and Lazlo Moholy-Nagy found it worthy of praise - for it is also one of the most robust and practical wirting instruments ever made. This stylish Parker "51" SPECIAL Mark I series has been manufactured in stunning RARE cocoa celluloid material. The pen bears a 1/10 16K gold filled cap, with a blue diamond on the top, representing Parker's lifetime warranty. The cap is in good condition, without any dings and dents, only showing minor sign of usage. The aerometric filling system is in good working order. This Parker "51" has a classic elegance and has been produced to the highest standards of craftsmanship, technology and aesthetics. The pen has been serviced. The pen writes a medium to broad line smoothly. This is rare and very much sought after, of such a collectible and vintage pen in excellent condition.

STORY

 

 

The Parker Pen Company was founded in 1888 by George S. Parker, whose mission was to manufacture a better pen. The Parker Pen Company's tradition epitomizes the highest standards of craftsmanship, technology, and aesthetics.

The Parker 51 was named because research and development was completed in Parker's 51st year (1888-1939). Introduced in the US market in 1941, it soon became widely imitated by most pen manufacturers. None were successful to any significant degree in competing against the famed Parker 51. It was a revolutionary design when it debuted, advertised as 'Ten Years Ahead' of its time.

     "Like a pen from another planet"....."So unique and so beautiful there is nothing to compare to it--so good it cannot be improved by any known method!" 

The Parker 51 remained popular and can still claim the highest sales volume of any fountain pen. It is considered by most collectors to be the best pen ever made, and is truly recognizable throughout the world. In a poll by the Illinois Institute of Technology, it was voted the fourth best industrial design of the 20th century.

The metal part of the filler mechanism has been polished. Talcum powder has been applied on the ink sac to prevent it sticking with the metal part of the filler system. The ink sac and the filler mechanism has been tested to ensure its full working order. The ink sac has been flashed and cleaned.
